Pregnant Teacher Caught Assaulting Pupils in Anambra School Amid Learning Difficulties

A disturbing case of child abuse has surfaced in Anambra State, where a yet-to-be-identified pregnant teacher was allegedly caught on camera physically assaulting young pupils inside a school.

The shocking incident, which has sparked outrage across social media, reportedly took place at Unique Nursery and Primary School—an institution believed to be operating within an uncompleted building. The teacher, frustrated by the children’s slow pace of learning, resorted to violence, repeatedly slapping and caning them in an attempt to force them to comply with her instructions.

Disturbing Footage Sparks Public Outrage

A short but harrowing video obtained by The Guild on Monday captures the distressing scene. The clip, which has rapidly circulated across multiple social media platforms, shows the teacher mercilessly striking the helpless children while they cower under her harsh discipline. Each blow landed with force, leaving the pupils visibly distressed.

According to eyewitnesses, the teacher was conducting a reading lesson when she lost patience with the students. Frustrated that the children were not grasping the lesson as quickly as she expected, she resorted to physical punishment in an apparent bid to coerce them into learning faster.

“The children were trying, but she wasn’t satisfied with their performance,” said a source familiar with the matter. “She wanted them to read, and when they struggled, she started beating them.”

Anambra Authorities Yet to React

Despite the viral nature of the video and the growing public outcry, officials from the Anambra State Government have yet to release an official statement regarding the incident. Efforts to obtain a response from relevant authorities have so far proven unsuccessful.

The incident has, however, reignited conversations about corporal punishment in schools, particularly in private institutions with little or no regulatory oversight. Many have expressed concerns about the suitability of the learning environment in such schools, especially given that Unique Nursery and Primary School is reportedly operating out of an unfinished building.

Public Reaction and Calls for Justice

Social media users, activists, and parents alike have strongly condemned the teacher’s actions, calling for an immediate investigation and justice for the affected children. Some have also questioned the school’s legitimacy, urging authorities to look into its operations.

“This is completely unacceptable! No teacher has the right to beat a child like this,” one commenter wrote on X (formerly Twitter). “That woman should be held accountable, and the school must be investigated.”

Others have highlighted the psychological and emotional damage that such actions could inflict on young learners. Experts in child development warn that excessive corporal punishment can have lasting negative effects, including fear of learning, low self-esteem, and even long-term trauma.

The Bigger Issue: Corporal Punishment in Nigerian Schools

While the assault in Anambra State has drawn widespread attention, it is hardly an isolated case. Across Nigeria, incidents of corporal punishment remain alarmingly common despite advocacy efforts and legal measures aimed at protecting children from abuse.

Educational experts argue that outdated disciplinary methods persist largely due to a lack of teacher training and proper monitoring. Many teachers, especially in private or unregulated schools, still view physical discipline as an effective way to enforce compliance, despite mounting evidence to the contrary.

The Anambra State Government now faces increasing pressure to take action against the teacher in question and to investigate the school’s operations. Parents and stakeholders are also calling for stronger enforcement of child protection laws to ensure that no student has to endure such treatment in the future.

As the public awaits an official response, one thing remains clear: incidents like these demand swift justice and urgent reforms to ensure a safer learning environment for Nigeria’s children.
