Nigerian gospel artist Akinade Ibuoye, better known as Gaise Baba, has opened up about his deeply personal battles with addiction, purity, and the redemptive power of faith and music. Known for his lyrical depth and bold sound in the gospel music space, Gaise Baba revealed in a recent interview that his spiritual walk and musical breakthrough were born out of pain, struggle, and a sincere search for purpose.
The singer shared his story during a heartfelt conversation with Chude Jideonwo, where he offered an honest account of his journey into ministry and the challenges he faced along the way. Far from the polished image many associate with gospel musicians, Gaise Baba painted a picture of a young man who encountered temptation early and wrestled with it for years.
He disclosed that his battle with addiction began at the age of 15, when he was first exposed to pornography. What seemed like curiosity at the time quickly spiraled into a consuming habit, even as he made a conscious decision to pursue a life of purity. The artist described how, after making a covenant with God to remain sexually pure until marriage, he ironically found himself sinking deeper into the very struggle he had vowed to overcome.
“Yes, I married as a virgin. I and my wife. It took more time, sir, before we find the way,” he said, reflecting on the path they both chose. “I was 15 when I started watching bad things. Now, there’s something you call covenant of purity. Something you come into to say, you’re not going to have sex till you get married. I just scribbled something. I signed it and went to meet the pastor.”
Despite that public and personal commitment, Gaise Baba found himself entangled in the grip of addiction. He acknowledged that even the strongest moral commitments can be tested, highlighting the complexity of human weakness. “In fact, it was shortly after that I got addicted to porn. I knew that under the right temperature and pressure any man can fall.”
What makes his story even more compelling is the intersection between his spiritual revival and musical success. Gaise Baba revealed that his breakthrough in music, marked by the release of the song No Turning Back, happened during one of the most painful seasons of his life. The track, which features fellow gospel minister Lawrence Oyor, has since become a spiritual anthem for many and a defining moment in his career.
He explained that the song was released shortly after the death of his mother, a tragedy that shook him to his core. Rather than let the grief consume him, he turned to God and poured his heart into the music. What followed was a wave of recognition that he was no longer seeking, yet arrived just when it was needed most.
“This season everybody’s talking about kicked off like two weeks after my mom passed. Fame came at a point that I was no longer looking for it,” he said.
The sudden success of No Turning Back represented more than just musical accomplishment. It became a symbol of transformation, evidence that brokenness can lead to beauty, and that personal struggles, when surrendered to God, can fuel ministry and impact lives.
Gaise Baba’s story is a reminder that vulnerability often lies behind the most powerful testimonies. His openness about his challenges with addiction and purity shatters the illusion of perfection that sometimes surrounds figures in ministry. Instead, it brings authenticity to his message and relatability to his audience.
His message to others, especially young people walking a similar path, is clear: purity is possible, but it requires constant reliance on God and honest confrontation with one’s weaknesses. “Under the right temperature and pressure any man can fall,” he repeated, emphasizing the need for grace and accountability.
Today, Gaise Baba continues to use his platform to encourage, uplift, and inspire. His music reflects a life that has seen both valleys and victories. Through songs like No Turning Back, he speaks not just from talent, but from experience, making his voice a guiding light for many navigating the turbulent waters of life, faith, and self-discovery.
